He took this as a sign of ... something .... and turned his ship at right angles to its path. Half an hour later he went right through the wreckage of the SS Central American and picked up a hundred of its drowning passengers. It was later determined through interviews with survivors and the captain that the albatross flew into his face just as the other ship finally sank.
