The Ukrainian government is merely bringing the monastery's legal situation in line with the relevant norms, according to those interviewed. And yet, at the same time, Fr Boyko notes that "many priests and monks, and bishops, have cooperated with the occupiers. Society is not blind, and it sees this. And now society has taken this matter into its own hands.” In other words, the move is political retaliation. Cynical.

Thank you for this report. A question for Mr. Babynskyi: What was the reaction within Ukraine, if any, to Pope Francis's comments on the situation at his March 15 general audience, in which he appeared to side with the monks of the UOC-MP (while describing them as religious sisters)?

"E penso alle suore ortodosse della Lavra di Kiev: chiedo alle parti in guerra di rispettare i luoghi religiosi. Le suore consacrate, le persone consacrate alla preghiera – siano di qualsiasi confessione – sono a sostegno del popolo di Dio." (The Vatican's English translation: "I am also thinking about the Orthodox nuns of the Lavra in Kiev. I call on the parties at war to respect religious places. Consecrated sisters, people consecrated to prayer, from any Confession, are a support to the People of God.")
