Is Byrne another Quinn protege, or are McElroy's and Wester's practices just common for Francis appointees? It looks like Cardinal Farrell has been giving Byrne lessons in "see no evil, hear no evil."
I am so sad about this. I knew Fr Robert Byrne when I was at the Oxford Oratory in 2001-early 2002. I'll continue to pray for him, and for those very damaged and dangerous priests around him.
This is yet another reason why clerical sexual offenders should be laicised. It's too easy for a comfortable and well-entrenched clerical predator with no desire to face the real world, plus a lifetime of finely honed manipulation skills, to bamboozle a newcomer to the diocese who genuinely wants to see good in others.
There has been too much of this in the Church, but it's so sad when it's (for me) close to home yet again.
I know Fr Robert from setting up the Oratory in Oxford. I know him as a conscientious and humble man. I don't find the criticisms of this report convincing. Fr Robert made a friend of a sinner. If that in itself is wrong it rather makes a nonsense of Jesus' many connections. His statement that he didn't know that McCoy had a past is dismissed without evidence or right of reply. His choice of bishop's residence is not a mansion. It's a semi-detached house and it's not where it is that matters but how he uses it. For every Catholic that complained there will be another Geordie Catholic who regarded it as a reasonable choice in the circumstances. Fr Robert comes from the traditional end of the Catholic Church. It's the end that attracts vocations and conversions these days. The Oratorians offer God the best worship that money can buy in the knowledge that the the rich don't need their help to have access to beautiful images and glorious music but the poor do. Another good priest gone. Who really benefits from this?
Another UGH!
Wow. Can you imagine if bishops and dioceses in the U.S. were subject to independent scrutiny like this?
Sadly they would have to agree with it and their idea of transparency seems more like “Let’s be less opaque, but not much less”
I wish our bishops were scrutinized like this.
