I really appreciate these dispatches from the pilgrimage; they really bring it to life in a way I just don't get from my local Catholic newspaper. Any chance we'll hear more from some of the other routes? JD's take on the start of the Serra route was great...I'm curious to learn how the Rockies treated the pilgrims.
I don't know about the Rockies, but I was fortunate to join the Serra route pilgrims on Corpus Christi Sunday in Park City, Utah. We had a wonderful procession then a beautiful evening mass celebrated by our own Bishop Solis as well as Bp. Gordon, auxiliary of Las Vegas, who had come to accompany the pilgrims as a representative of our metropolitan
This is the best story in The Pillar today. Amid the gloom at the top end of the Church, what a joy to see light and peace and graces flowing like clear water under a grimy mountain. The Church is alive and well where it matters.
Thank you very much for this story. I was really upset when I wasn't allowed to walk on my diocesan pilgrimage last year on account of my age. And I knew that it wouldn't be possible for me to walk on any of these pilgrimages. But this story reminded me that in the year 2000 Bishop Jenky, co-bishop of the Fort Wayne South Bend diocese, blessed an 8 foot cross with blessed oil and I carried that cross while praying for the state and people of Indiana and going to all the jubilee churches in the state that had been designated by Pentecost. (I missed some in my own diocese that hadn't been designated yet.) I started in a Jubilee church in Louisville, walked to Madison, then to Indianapolis, up to Howe, across through South Bend and Gary to Whiting, down through Terra Haute and Spencer, Bloomington, St. Meinrad, Vincennes, Rockport, Evansville, Posey, and ended in a Jubilee church in what was originally Brown County Illinois.
And now I am not feeling quite so bad about not going on this pilgrimage because all of them will probably cross where I have been in pilgrimage myself.
Beautiful story. The Pillar at its best.
