I can't see why people would want to receive spiritual direction from someone who shows such disregard for "thou shalt not steal". And I agree that he should pay the same penalty for this crime as an ordinary layperson.
Successful con artists are charming, agreeable, credible people. Otherwise they'd quickly fail. You will always find a cheer squad around a con artist, partly because it's easier to believe that the accusers are wrong than admit you were conned.
“… chancery officials have scheduled a meeting for early April to discuss the priest’s faculties, and the prospect of a canonical penal process to address the theft.“
I hope they throw the book at him. Seriously… there’s no excuse for this kind of deception in the priesthood. Even if he is truly repentant, reparations need to be enforced.
This has been a major be problem with parishes in the USA. Our churches pay for consultants for small thing.Priest should be taking care of ministerial work. Hire An accountant for the parishes or get a parishioner to do forensic audits of priest personal accounts. This story is about Elder abuse a big so called ministry of Catholic Charities. As always someone did not speak up. Priest are not businessmen nor are they always correct. This priest should be mandated to return the money to the priest families and The IRS needs to challenge him on tax evasion
Fr. David is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I worked as the Student Secretary/Peer Minister @ EMU from 1985-88. Campus Ministy in the 80's was big. Lansing is home to several Big 10/MAC/other universities. Fr. Larry, His predecessor was my college priest, confessor and co-worker in the vinyard. After graduation I attended many retreats at SFRS annually. I was invited to join a retreat team for those living in the single state. Fr. David was serving out his permanent diaconate year then. I sat with this man, praying with him. Listening to his wisdom in preaching, teaching and assisting my own presentation. He NEVER appeared suspect. He favored Ignatius' Spirituality.
Fr. Larry passed in 2015 after an unexpected/sudden illness. RIP. He'd have been livid at this. Later h'd say, I've prayed, now let us pray for our brother priest, who has lost his way and forgotten his call according to the order of Malchizidek. He is a priest forever. He will answer to God on the day of Judgment. May God be merciful and kind upon his soul.
Fr. David was also involved in the Crusillo movement. There was a Spiritual Direction Center @ SFRS. It was a haven for the entire State of Michigan Dioceses.
I attended my first ever ordination at the Cathedral, Fr. David's.... &
2 others. Fr. Larry was ill and couldn't attend. He strongly encouraged me to go. It was beautiful!
Help heal his hardened, greedy, yet priestly heart. I may write to him in prison. I can't just yet. My wound is open and raw. My anger, palpable. I will pray with Song of Solomon 2:15.
May justice, mercy, peace and love prevail, Amen & Amen
Call me old fashioned but I’m a big fan of convicted criminals going to jail for their crime.

It's the same with sexual predators.
