Unfortunately for the judges shielding Mr. McCarrick from justice in this life, they, like the utterly unrepentant McCarrick (denied everything as long as he remained competent) & all the Church officials who shielded him & promoted him, will one day stand before the Just Judge.
I don't think this judge is doing anything wrong. Certainly not anything to warrant placing him in a tier with McCarrick and those who covered up abuse, though perhaps that's not what you meant to imply.
The judge isn't 'shielding' McCarrick, he's adhering to the limits of his own rightful authority given the circumstances of the case.
Correct. The wrong was enabling McCarrick to live his “lifestyle of the rich & famous” all those years with (common element here) an off-the-books $2-3 million slush fund 😡
We owe many prayers and gratitude to the victims as well as associates who spoke up. They are heroes who will be the reason our Church becomes better and more concretely able to connect the sacramental experience to healing.
My advice to all Catholics of good will is: go out there and invite people to share their experiences in the Church with you. If you attend a parish, it’s a safe bet someone in their has had an inappropriate encounter (in the past, or even at another parish). I had an enormous difficulty finding a priest or lay person to listen to my adverse experiences, as nothing physical happened. And all too often, I meet other people who have left the Church or converted out for the same reason. The credibility of our faith depends on us doing better.
Is this the same incident in which Grein claims that Cardinal Bernardin was involved? That detail has always struck me because it raises the stakes around Grein's claims and whether they can be taken in a straightforward manner. If it's true, it's a huge deal. If it's false, it's huge too, because Grein's testimony has been so central to the media coverage of McCarrick (although I have never been totally clear on what role Grein's allegations played in the McCarrick report). [Edit: Not only the McCarrick report but also the canonical procedure that led to McC's laicization.]
I don't know if this is correct, but I wonder whether journalists are reluctant to even touch that detail because of a lack of evidence one way or another plus its explosive nature, but I think it's worth putting out there for the reasons I stated in the original comment.
Right, the prospect that Bernardin really was a masterfully manipulative abuser who brazenly got away with it for his whole life is rather unsettling, to say the least.
Let's hope he sincerely repented prior to his brain being unable to comprehend what he did.
His case is not ended. His next judge is our great high priest and Messiah, the Lord Jesus.

I was wondering the same thing. I was waiting for that to be mentioned in this article.

If only he had seen human justice sufficient to make repentance more likely. Millstones would be better than the "success" of his life.
This is totally disgusting. This is justice rigged by the hierarchy in collusion with the democrat party. Totally corrupt.
