Generally speaking, the plural of folk is folk in British usage, and in certain American regions and dialects. But on the whole, American usage generally favors "folks" as the plural of folk.

Just use the German “volk”. It fits the setting nicely.

The response to Bishop Cupich is indicative of the incivility in the church today. Hope for the synod diminishes in my life each day. Our diocese has made what appears to be a false claim by your map of engagement with our Holy Fathers wishes. We have a Bishop who appears to be unable to lead and has surrounded himself very intentionally with several priests who enable this. Several of us have volunteered to assist with the synod since the Summer. Not one word uttered in our parish, one of the largest in the country. Looks like “ in your face” to so many of us.Laity are speaking up but how do you work with folks who are working against you? Our US bishops will need to check the red hats and Don some humility for any real change to take place.Jane Francisco

I mean this very sincerely, can you please expand a little more what you mean regarding the synod process at your parish, or lack thereof? What are your hopes for the synod and why do you think your bishop is acting the way he is?

Yes,we have no synod process at our parish. So many in our faith community do not even know there is a synod. How would they if it has never been addressed? This was not a nice suggestion by Pope Francis. He expects that it will be pursued. My hope for the synod is an opportunity to talk about what will help lead to a more rich and inclusive church and diocese. We talk a great talk but do not walk even a good walk in my less than humble opinion. I cannot prove this but don’t think our Bishop is able to lead and those priests who enable him seem not to agree or even acknowledge Pope FRANCIS. We have a John Paul 11 environment and have found ways to support a seminary with that focus. We have begged Rome, the Nuncio,USCCB to look into this. Not even the courtesy of one response. Pray for us. Did not mention any names intentionally.

"Divine Decision" used to be called "The Tribunal" -- I used to work in the building where all that was filmed! It's fun to see it again!

RE: booing Cardinal Cupich -- booing bishops is actually not unusual, historically speaking. We have a conclave because Romans got tired of waiting around and locked all the cardinals up, delivering less food each day, until they elected a pope. Bishops and their people have often had contentious relationships. Chicago is a corrupt, far-left city that has some of the strictest Covid regulations in the entire country, a soaring murder rate, and a lot of unrest -- not to mention some serious recent church and Catholic school closings/consolidations. If some of the people living there really don't want to listen to the cardinal give them platitudes, I don't think it should surprise anyone.

No, historically speaking it is not that unusual. But here in the U.S., in recent history, it is. :-)

Except in the past, it was more a 'modernist' tactic to disrespect a clergyman whereas increasingly it's traditionalists who have forsaken respect for the office.

A useful read, as always. He's not in the Calendar but St H. remains in the 2004 Martyrology, and a Mass in his name _could_ be celebrated today, and indeed he continues to be commemorated in the Traditional Rite.

Hard to know if those booing in the crowd have tried to reach out to the bishop privately, then maybe more openly, and now the only way they can communicate with their shepherd is to boo him in public. I feel our bishops are way too busy with administrative junk to lead their flocks like they should (and I'm sure like many of them want to). I know many people (not in Chicago) who have tried reaching out to their bishop with absolutely no reply. It's really disheartening that the faithful can't even communicate with their bishop. I'm in no way saying booing is a good thing but if they've tried reaching out and not getting a reply, then not sure what they should do. I'm sure writing a letter to the Vatican isn't really going to accomplish anything either; and who even really knows how to do that?
