Well, it probably isn't. The province for the FSSP includes the whole of the US, so there was nothing unusual about that transfer, on its face. Now, it's possible there was already some more going on, but the transfer itself doesn't necessarily evoke suspicion.
If there would be a question to be asked along these lines, it would be if the SSPX knew something about the priest who ended up abusing his niece while on an unspecified sabbatical. Were there issues that led him to be on sabbatical? Did they know about these proclivities he had?
I formerly attended an FSSP parish and, after moving during the pandemic, now attend an SSPX parish. I try to avoid the politics of the trad movement, but both cases are, not only extremely vile, but also incredibly disheartening to someone that attends the TLM is trying to bring a young family up in that environment.
Worse, is the response of both societies. Radio silence from the SSPX and a mind boggling statement from the FSSP today. And even worse are seeing people i otherwise respect blindly online defending them.
Sadly for many, the trad movement has a team mentality.
Yup. The secretiveness and obscurity of trad societies is a problem. It used to be that you could see FSSP assignments on their website - hasn't been the case for a few years know. No transparency about even the most basic of things.
This is what makes me most sad about Traditiones Custodes. While I love the SSPX priory that I am currently in (and enjoyed my old FSSP parish), the best TLM environment I have ever been apart of was a diocesan parish. It was just part of the normal parish life- and there were no politics or conforming to doing things a certain way. No feeling persecuted or like an outsider.
It just was what it was- the 12pm mass at the parish and 10am mass on feast days. Things got complicated around the Tridium, but it was a healthy and prosperous environment for tradition Catholics and their families.
It was extraordinarily depraved material, the worst of that evil stuff. I think he was a priest offering a Mass streamed by YouTube which I watched.
The FSSP statement is something else:
'The North American Province of the Fraternity of St. Peter is aware that on June 8, 2023, Fr. James Jackson entered a guilty plea in exchange for a reduced sentence. The Fraternity of St. Peter pledges to cooperate with civil and ecclesiastical authorities in this case. Fr. Jackson has not had faculties to function publicly as a priest since his arrest in October 2021. Until Fr. Jackson was arrested, the Fraternity of St. Peter was not aware of anything in his words or behavior that could give rise to suspicion concerning such actions. Crimes of this type are execrable, and Catholics should pray for the victims of pornography and work to put an end to its industry.'
Heartbreaking. Let's pray for everyone involved, including the victims, law enforcement, attorneys and court officials, Fr. Jackson, and for the Church.
I was absolutely shocked this morning to see the FSSP’s statement in response. Not sure if you have update the article to reflect the statement, but jeez...
First they imply Jackson might not actually be guilty. That he just just plead guilty to get a reduced sentence.
Then they blame the porn industry. Way to make me defend the porn industry (thanks FSSP!) but what Jackson is guilty of wasn’t porn or a product of that vile business.
It was child abuse and rape. Produced by the most evil monsters amongst us.
The FSSP is not responsible for Jackson’s crimes. Thousands and thousands of people were deceived by him (including me!). But the FSSP’s statement 1) refuses to accept his culpability and questions his guilt and 2) minimizes his crimes- which are beyond horrific.
It’s time to move on. The FSSP and the trad movement as a whole needs to heal. This mentality is a cancer to the whole Church. It’s not just trads that do this... the fact that the Legionaries still exist and that Rupnik is still a Jesuit shows that this is a problem in every ideological corner of the Church. But it’s a cancer. And it needs to be eradicated.
Light drives out darkness. Transparency, not secrecy. The whole Church hurts because of clergy sexual abuse (which includes child pornography) but mostly victim-survivors. Usually they suffer life-long effects. LIFE-LONG. Because of a priest. Also because of fellow Catholics, especially traditional Catholics, who blame victims when the allegation comes out. “Not MY priest. He’s so prayerful and holy. That person is just after money.” You could not be more wrong my friends. No victim wants to make an allegation and risk the repercussions, to have their heart ripped out again and stomped on by the one to whom they reported. To see someone receive justice is satisfying because it is so seldom done.
Glad to hear this guy will be in prison where he belongs.
Lord, have mercy...
He was our Scout chaplain …
A little curious as to why he was moved from Colorado all the way to Connecticut.

Sadly that is gone in a lot of dioceses.
Hope they nail him with the max. He needs to do double digits inside, at minimum.

Shameful. Disordered perverts have no place in the priesthood. He has scandalized thousands of faithful.

Rant over.
"Let us work to put an end to its [the porn] industry."
Amen.
End it on Instagram (notorious) and other social media.
Raise an e-wall around anyone under 21.
Make porn consumption uncool, unremunerative, culturally unacceptable, undignified, anti-feminist.
Yank porn's access, business model, invisibility
......yeah, right. like that's going to happen in this sexualized era
Does this story merit top of the masthead with a gigantic booking picture to boot? (It's a sad story, to be sure.)
It definitely does.
How does this happen? Let alone to anyone but a priest? What a lie he led.
