By the very nature of his comment on “bishops and their pastoral responsibilities” (reference in this article) the Pope has chosen to politicize the abortion fiasco.

Shame on him.

“When the Church loses its pastoral nature, when a bishop loses his pastoral nature, it causes a political problem"

I STRONGLY disagree. When a bishop loses his pastoral nature, it's usually to avoid political problems. If a Bishop chooses instead to wrestle with the difficulties of discerning and seeing through true pastoral responses to difficult situations, that's when political problems happen. I'm not sure what the Holy Father meant (no doubt his intent), but it sounds to me like the church viewed through a political lense rather than a spiritual one, which is very off-putting.

Why is the pope concerned with causing a "political problem"? Shouldn't he be more concerned with causing scandal?

Any chance you know someone who could do a credible translation of that article from German to English, republish it on The Pillar? That could be pretty cool! It would also be a deeper window into the Church in Germany.

Did you see the quote taken out of context from the June 17 Pillar? It’s on Catholic World Report for July 7.
