This is a really hard one for me to hear about. I was a seminarian at Mundelein from 2013-2019 and I really enjoyed all of Dr. McNamara's presentations on Church architecture. He also was from Long Island, NY, which is where I also grew up. I didn't share any personal conversations aside from at the seminary lunch tables, but he always was kind and thoughtful. Let us pray for all involved in this both those who were sinned against and the one who committed the offenses.
A sad reminder of how adults may be sexually abused by Church officials in positions of power. Praying for all abused and abusers. I recommend SNAP (Survivors Network of those abused by Priests) for resources.
This sucks. I’ve met many enthusiastic Catholics in the AoC with an intellectual bent that are big fans of “D-Mac,” as they affectionately called him. He wrote a glowing recommendation for the “Sanctuary of Divine Mercy,” a 24hr adoration chapel that was to be next to Saint Stanislaus Kostka (My favorite Parish, btw.) Thankfully, the project never went through but a beautiful Monstrance (The Iconic Monstrance) intended for the chapel is now in the Church building, which IS open 24/7 for adoration outside the scheduled Mass times.
I remember asking him at a FOCUS conference in Chicago (or maybe Indianapolis) “At what point of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass does the Mystical Slaying of Christ occur?” I can’t recall what he said, but I remember being unsatisfied with the answer. This was at the Liturgy Guys Podcast booth.
I think Pius XII clarified that it is at the double consecration. Before, many theologians held it was at the priest's communion. But I would have to spend some time finding sources for that.
Thank you for posting this Linda! I don't remember how I came across natesmission, however their credentials look suitable enough. While Wisconsin is thankfully heavily Catholic, the state also has a high rate of alcohol abuse, go figure. Sexual abuse is everywhere but due to personal reasons and hopefully in the spirit of Saint Peter Damian, I firmly believe that if clerical sexual abuse isn't promptly addressed and healing offered to the victims by any means necessary, the Gospel will be lost to generations of new Catholics and prayers may cease for those still suffering or already passed.
Thank you for saying this Linda. Awake is always happy to connect with those who have experienced sexual abuse by Catholic leaders, no matter what age that abuse took place. I'm grateful for the Pillar's continued attention to the abuse of adults.
They're dropping like flies. I was on a retreat once with the now infamous retreat master for Mother Teresa, Fr McGuire, who turned out to be a well seasoned pedophile of sorts. Thankfully he did nothing to me, but the trail of shame and sin they are leaving makes one wonder if there is not a better way to weed out these bad apples.
Thank you once again for going the extra mile and exposing allegations against people who might normally be considered on the side of the angels. We need to be impartial, and we need to be seen to be impartial.
There's a lot of good, unmarried, same sex attracted Catholic laymen out there who are quietly living chaste lives, or at least really trying to. Stories like this are especially heartbreaking for them. But they're also cautionary tales, so thank you again.

This is really sad to hear. He is a great professor, even if he is a sinner as well. May God have mercy and heal all who have been harmed.

Awake Milwaukee is a great resource for survivors, including those who have been harmed as adults.
