Would the US Bishops ever find any action by a politician so abhorrent that they would call for his/her excommunication? (Asking for a few million friends.)
Oh wait...I remember one case! New Orleans Archbishop Joseph Rummel excommunicated Judge Leander Perez in 1962 because the judge was a segregationist. Judge Perez would later retract his stance and reconciled with the Church prior to his death.
Re your example, that’s a powerful case for denying Holy Communion to these pro death politicians: 1) it shows the Church is serious about her teachings, 2) it rebukes those causing public scandal, 3) it shows mercy and compassion for the erroring politician who then makes a retraction and presumably good Confession before death. Michael Scott would define this as a win-win-win-win situation - how can the entire conference not realize this?
Not having seen the document yet, I certainly can’t be sure, but it seems from the reporting here that our Bishops are more concerned with offending wayward and unrepentant Catholics than with offending Our Lord. May God have mercy.
Bishop Strickland asked for approval of amendment 16. What was that?
After all the contentious debate, a underwhelming conclusion.
I never expected they would ever call out a politician by name, but it seems even suggesting withholding Holy Communion was too much.
Very disappointing... but not altogether unexpected.
Yes, 'bout what you'd expect.

Any chance someone has a link to the document? Google is unhelpful in this question. Lots of articles ABOUT the doc without linking to it.
