This is a great analysis Edgar! This is what diplomats refer to as being stuck between a proverbial rock and hard place, and the least bad option is to get to work officially as soon as possible and accept the ‘trap’.

This strategy by Pope Francis is not a new one… 70 years ago it was called Ostpolitik and now it’s the way to balance the realities of State power over a population of Catholics and a portion of the Church with trying to live the Gospel in an international environment that gives very few flying monkeys about moral values beyond self interest. It takes a Pope with a charism of prophetic evangelism to ‘get away’ with the kind of visit to Poland or Mexico in 1979.
