JD Flynn and Scott Powell are back in the classroom— with special guest, Pillar producer Kate Olivera— to talk about the Book of Romans. This week, Scott talks about St. Paul and the nature of letters.
Now that I've heard Ep1 I'm so excited to hear the rest of it! I love Scott's emphasis on the context of the letter - I had never thought about the fact that the expulsion of Jews from Rome would have left Gentiles in charge of the Church. I guess I would have assumed that all Christians would have counted as "Jews" and been expelled along with them, but given that "Jew" was primarily an ethnic designation, I realize now that that makes no sense. This podcast is so valuable.
ALSO I love that you took someone's suggestion of including Kate in the discussion! Feels like a real Sunday School class now :)
Our parish is doing the Ascension Press Romans study. We’ve got two sessions going—morning and evening—because we had a very good response from parishioners. Far from being put off, they signed up because they’re intrigued and want to learn more about this amazing letter. It’s going great. Much participation and interaction. I think you’d be surprised if you offered it to you parish.
I nominated the "Romans" study from Ascension, having enjoyed & profited from the "Bible Timeline," "Acts," & "Revelation" studies, but the parish director of faith formation vetoed Romans based on her reading of the Ascension study's online reviews. I have not given up hope of changing her mind.
Excellent! The explanation of the genre of epistle was super helpful, as well as the insights into Paul's personal story, and how this letter fits into the historical context. So much that I've never heard before.
Also, JD is very much showing his excitable golden retriever side this episode, lol
I love, love, love the Sunday School podcast. I haven't even listened to this series on Romans yet, and I already know it'll be great. The chemistry between JD and Scott is wonderful: with JD asking just the right questions and Scott providing excellent answers. The Gospel of Mark and Advent series made me want to subscribe; the Psalms series turned me into a subscriber.
As a related aside: I'm currently teaching a Bible Study on the Gospel of Mark for local parish (shout out to Our Lady Queen of All Saints in Ville Platte), primarily based on your series. I'm plugging your podcast and Pillar site each session.
Yay! Pressing play ASAP. Every time Romans comes up in the Divine Office I'm just left confused.

Huzzah! I'm very grateful, because I've suggesting Romans as the next parish Bible study, but keep getting outvoted in favor of other studies.

That's interesting. I wonder where she found the reviews and what they said. Do you know?
I did an Internet search and couldn't find any reviews of the study.
