I have not gone back and looked up old data, but this actually seems less polarized and more jumbled than similar charts I have seen in the past. E.g., Oklahoma at basically the same level as Massachusetts and Hawaii despite very different laws and attitudes. The correlation with partisanship is roughly there but not as clear-cut as I would have expected.
